Maintaining and Increasing Productivity: The Third Step to an Organized Home

So, you’ve decluttered and set up some solid organizational systems—yay! That’s a huge accomplishment and something to be proud of. But now you might be wondering… what’s next? For me, the final step in creating an organized home has always been about maintenance and finding ways to increase productivity in everyday life. Without a plan to keep things going, even the best systems can start to fall apart. But don’t worry—I've found that with a few simple habits and strategies, it’s totally possible to maintain order and make your home run more efficiently.

Why Maintenance Matters

I’ve learned over the years that organization isn’t a one-and-done kind of thing. It’s more like a lifestyle—an ongoing process that requires a little attention every day. And here’s the best part: the more productive and organized my home becomes, the more time I have for what really matters—making memories with my family, focusing on personal goals, or just enjoying a calm and peaceful space.

How I Maintain Organization and Boost Productivity

Here are some of the steps I’ve taken to keep things running smoothly and to make sure all the hard work I put into organizing doesn’t go to waste:

1. I Stick to Daily Habits and Create Routines

Little daily routines have made a world of difference. Some of my go-to habits include:

  • A quick five-minute tidy-up before bed

  • Putting things back right after I use them

  • Keeping simple morning and evening routines to anchor my day

  • A mail sorting practice to avoid paper clutter

    • I will share more about my process in a future post!

  • A laundry schedule to keep clothes from piling up

    • Do you like to do one load a day? All your laundry in 1-2 days?

It doesn’t take much time, but the consistency really adds up!

2. I Schedule Regular Resets

Even with solid systems in place, life gets messy sometimes. I like to schedule a weekly or monthly “reset” where I check in on what’s working, what needs tweaking, and get rid of anything that’s slipped through the cracks.

3. I Use Time-Saving Tools and Strategies

One thing that’s helped me tremendously is using tools that streamline everyday tasks, like:

  • A family command center where we keep schedules, meal plans, and important papers all in one spot

  • Timers and checklists to keep me (and the family) on track

  • Subscription services for household essentials to cut down on last-minute store runs

4. I Involve the Whole Family

Let’s be honest—keeping a home organized shouldn’t be a solo job. I’ve started teaching my daughter basic organizing habits and giving her age-appropriate chores. We make it fun with music, timers, or little rewards to keep us motivated. It really is a team effort!

5. I Declutter Regularly

I’ve made it a habit to do a seasonal purge of things we no longer use—clothes, toys, kitchen items, you name it. If something isn’t serving a purpose, I let it go before it turns into clutter.

6. I Stay Flexible

Life is always changing, and I’ve learned to adjust my systems when needed. If something isn’t working for our current season of life, I don’t hesitate to change it. Organization should support our lifestyle—not the other way around.

Moving Forward

At the end of the day, maintaining an organized home and increasing productivity isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being consistent. When I stick to simple habits and make organization part of my everyday life, everything just flows better.

Now that I’ve decluttered, built systems, and embraced maintenance, I can honestly say our home feels more peaceful and manageable. And that feeling? It’s totally worth it.

Peace, Love & Organizing!
